Having to sleep in airport because of a missed connection or a delayed flight can be far from an pleasant experience. It happens to everyone sooner or later, and you can benefit from this mass of experience. I only just found out about this site sleepingatairports.net but apparently it has been going since 1996, which is a hell of a long time on the Internet.
One of my favorite tips on it, which to be honest I am kicking myself for not having thought of is this: Instead of breaking the bank on an airport hotel or trying to sleep in a hard plastic chair, you hook yourself up with some cheap car hire, then sleep in the car. I can see that that might not be the best plan in all incidences, but it is a much more attractive option than some of the alternatives.
The site also has information on safety and security if you are actually trying to catch a nights sleep within the terminal. Handy stuff! What is pretty funny read are the reviews of the different airports around the world from the perspective of airport sleepers. The worst airport for sleeping in is apparently the one in Paris.
What makes Paris Charles de Gaulle the worst airport to crash in is apparently a combination of several things. Rude staff are mentioned, as is the general state of cleanliness and the smell. This is a problem in Paris not contained to the airport to be honest.
Things that seem to make for a pleasant airport sleeping experience revolve around such areas as cleanliness and facilities. Tee are airports with showers and everything. Another great top tip that I picked up was that you can pay to get access to the luxury first class lounges at airports. Some of these are pretty sweet places to hang out for a while, and certainly beat sitting on a hard plastic bench being given dirty looks by security staff and having your belongings eyed up by thieves.
